Empowering Communities & Illuminating their Future
In many East African communities, women and girls face arduous journeys, walking for hours each day to collect firewood from forests. These brave individuals wake up before sunrise, enduring the scorching sun to gather branches and dried roots, as more than 70% of rural homes in East Africa rely on wood as their primary source of energy for cooking. However, this responsibility disproportionately falls on the shoulders of women and girls due to family role assignments, placing them in risky and dangerous situations with venomous snakes and bandits.
Pastoralist communities in regions like Arusha, Tanzania, Rift Valley in Kenya, and Karamoja in Uganda still live in traditional homes known as Manyattas. While these structures provide warmth and comfort, they lack chimneys, causing indoor smoke to accumulate within the Manyattas. This indoor pollution poses significant health risks, particularly to children who suffer from eye and respiratory infections, hindering their ability to attend school regularly.
ANEHOPE is dedicated to reducing these risks faced by our sisters and mothers. We empower women in these communities to construct economic stoves using locally available materials such as clay and bricks. Through a 15-day training program facilitated by our team of professionals, small groups of 10 families learn how to build their own economic stoves. Upon completion, they receive Training Certificates, enabling them to train other women in their communities on constructing these economic stoves.
In addition to technical training, ANEHOPE fosters fellowship and community unity through morning Bible Study sessions held before the stove-building sessions. These gatherings provide an opportunity for spiritual growth and empowerment, enabling women to work together towards a common goal. We also provide Bibles in local languages, ensuring that they can engage with the Word and strengthen their faith.
As women complete their own economic stoves, ANEHOPE takes another vital step by providing them with solar panels. This transformative addition not only helps eliminate indoor pollution caused by traditional cooking methods but also enables children to do their homework in the evening. By harnessing solar energy to light up Manyattas, we bridge the sustainable energy gap, fostering a healthier and more conducive environment for education.
The ANEHOPE Solar Panel Program yields numerous benefits:
1️⃣ Reduced Deforestation: Over 1,000 households have built their own economic stoves through the program, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of trees cut for firewood. This contributes to the preservation of forests and the overall ecosystem.
2️⃣ Improved Indoor Air Quality: By providing economic stoves and solar panels, ANEHOPE addresses indoor pollution, leading to a decrease in eye and respiratory infections among children. This positive impact enables more children to attend school regularly, while parents experience reduced visits to health clinics.
3️⃣ Sustainable Energy Solutions: Families in Manyattas have successfully reduced their reliance on firewood for cooking, heating, and lighting, thanks to the economic stoves and solar panels. This shift promotes sustainable energy practices and reduces environmental degradation.
4️⃣ Enhanced Safety: The Solar Panel Program minimizes the risks faced by women when venturing into forests for firewood, mitigating encounters with venomous snakes and bandits. This empowers women to focus on other aspects of their lives while ensuring their safety.
