Breaking the Chains of Period Poverty
In many parts of Africa, countless young girls face the harsh reality of “Period Poverty.” This term encompasses the global issue of inadequate access to menstrual hygiene products, limited education about menstrual health and women’s well-being, and the social stigma surrounding the natural menstrual cycle.
Sadly, period poverty is often intertwined with the economic hardships experienced by families, as parents struggle to provide even the most basic necessities for their children. ANEHOPE has taken a stand against period poverty by providing free sanitary pads to school girls in Kenya’s informal settlements and urban refugee communities.
In Kenya, more than 65% of school-age girls, particularly those living in informal settlements and refugee camps, are unable to afford sanitary pads. Their parents, already burdened by the daily challenge of putting food on the table, lack the financial means to purchase these essential products. As a result, over a million school-age girls in Kenya miss an average of four school days every month, solely due to the lack of access to feminine hygiene products.
At ANEHOPE, we have united as a team to address the unique challenges associated with menstruation in low-income communities, particularly in refugee camps and informal settlements. We have engaged local churches in these communities, facilitating open discussions and raising awareness about periods and menstrual health. Through these partnerships, we aim to break down barriers and provide education on women’s health, empowering young girls with knowledge and resources.
Additionally, ANEHOPE has organized workshops for church leaders, fostering conversations on how best to support and alleviate the burdens of “period poverty.” Together, we strive to eradicate the cultural shaming and ostracization that often accompany menstruation cycles, arising from a lack of women’s health education and limited access to essential resources.
Our Impact is growing:
Thanks to the unwavering support of individuals like you, we have made a significant impact on the lives of many:
🩸 Over 50,000 sanitary pads and menstrual products have been distributed to families in need across Kenya and Uganda. By providing these essential items, we help girls maintain their dignity and continue their education without interruption.
🌱 We have established 20 church-based initiatives within informal settlements and urban refugee communities. Through these initiatives, as well as student-led support groups, we create safe spaces where information about women’s health is shared, fostering dialogue, support, and empowerment.
Guided by biblical principles, we are reminded of the profound importance of caring for those in need. In James 1:27, we are called to “look after orphans and widows in their distress.” By providing access to menstrual products and education, we strive to uplift young girls, breaking the chains of period poverty and offering them hope for a brighter future while sharing the love of Christ with them.
